Industry Statistics 2026

Our Data Analytics Manager Jason Davies highlights some of the key findings in the Gambling Commission’s latest Industry Statistics and a link to some more detailed premises data.

Posted 17 September 2026 by Jason Davies

Today we have published the latest annual industry statistics, which report on the size and shape of the customer-facing gambling industry in Great Britain. We have been able to publish these statistics ten weeks earlier than usual due to changes that we made to the way licensed gambling operators submit their regulatory returns. Annual industry statistics will be published in September each year from now on.

These improvements have also made it possible for us to align the publication dates for Industry Statistics and the Gambling Survey for Great Britain (GSGB). This has enabled us to review the two outputs in parallel, supporting the Office for Statistics Regulation (OSR) (opens in new tab) recommendation to improve the coherence and comparability of gambling statistics.

Publishing the releases together helps us identify seasonality and trends across the data sources, build a more complete picture of the sector and strengthen our overall evidence base.

Highlights from industry statistics

Gross Gambling Yield (GGY) for the industry was £17.5 billion in the year to March 2026, which represents an increase of 4.4 percent since last year. This rise has been largely driven by GGY generated from the remote casino sector which has gone up by £736 million to an annual figure of £5.7 billion.

The non-remote (land-based) sector has 36.9 percent of the market share (excluding lotteries) at £4.86 billion. Licensed lotteries (including the National Lottery and society lotteries) comprise 24.6 percent of industry GGY at £4.3 billion.

Premises Data

The Industry Statistics also include aggregated premises data that operators report to us each quarter. You can see the data in Tab 3 of the data tables and page 6 of the Microsoft Power BI dashboard (opens in new tab). As well as this operator data, we also publish a detailed Register of gambling premises which is provided by local authority licensing teams.

We know the numbers sometimes differ, especially the number of betting shops because the premises register still includes some inactive premises. As this register is a valuable source of information for lots of people, we are working to improve data quality. We’ve now added a link to a map and dashboard of premises data (opens in new tab) to the Industry Statistics section on our website.

Feedback

There’s lots more to dive into in both the annual and the quarterly statistics. As always, we are keen to hear your thoughts. How do you use the statistics? What have you noticed? Let us know in this Industry Statistics survey (opens in new tab).
